Based on Jerzy Kosinski’s short comic novel, Being There follows Chance (Peter Sellers), a simpleton raised in isolation, educated only by television. When the wealthy recluse who raised him dies, Chance is forced out and fortuitously struck by a limousine owned by Eve Rand (Shirley MacLaine), wife of a powerful industrialist.
This biting satire, directed by Hal Ashby, presents a comic fable about a man whose reality comes entirely from TV. Sellers shines as the deadpan Chance, a cipher reflecting others’ desires. Shirley MacLaine, Jack Warden, and Melvyn Douglas deliver outstanding performances.
ALERT: Cheech and Chong feature in a unique way—a scene where Sellers watches their Basketball Jones cartoon from the Los Cochinos.
DVD Features: Audio in English and French; subtitles in English, French, Portuguese, and Spanish; cast/filmmaker profiles; theatrical trailer.
